Bonded It Isn't the Composite Holding Your Dental Practice Together

A book for practice owners and their teams

By Dr. Ramtin Khaef, with the team of the five offices behind BuzzWisely

Cover of Bonded: It Isn't the Composite Holding Your Dental Practice Together. An office manager in orange safety glasses raises a curing light toward the title while her team laughs behind her.
What is Bonded about?

Bonded is a book for dental practice owners and their teams about what really holds a dental office together: happy employees, happy patients and a happy bank account, in that order. It comes from the five dental offices behind BuzzWisely, where about seventy people answer the phones, clean the teeth and keep the schedule full every day.

Who is it for?

Everyone in the office. The front desk, answering the phone with one hand and an insurance question with the other. The assistant who knows who's scared before anyone else does. The hygienist, the treatment coordinator, the office manager, the associate, and the owner, carrying the part nobody else can see.

Nobody in a dental office succeeds alone, so the book is written for all of them. It's funny on purpose, because the job is, and every story in it comes from a real office day.

What's inside the book?

Twenty-one chapters in five parts:

  1. Bond Before Composite. The order that holds an office together, and how five offices learned it.
  2. Happy Employees. The front desk, the tasks nobody wants, pay, and feedback that runs in every direction, including toward the owner.
  3. Happy Patients. Visits that are easy on the patient, and what to do when something goes wrong.
  4. The Yes. Diagnosis as a team sport, and the conversation after "I'll think about it."
  5. The Front Door. The phones, recall and reactivation, and why two rings matter.

Scenes from the book

Every chapter of Bonded comes with a comic. A few of them:

Comic of a dental receptionist at a desk with three ringing phones: “You called eleven times during our lunch and left no message. Our phone thinks you two are dating.”
The front door: the phones ring hardest when the desk is empty.
Comic of a dental hygienist in a mask with watering eyes: “You ate an everything bagel right before your cleaning. Brave. Truly brave.”
Happy employees: the job comes with days like this.
Comic of a dental receptionist holding a plate of cookies: “You brought homemade cookies to your cleaning? We love you. You do know what we do here, right?”
Happy patients: some bring cookies.
Comic of a treatment coordinator with a small tooth sitting on her desk: “You’ll ‘think about it’? Wonderful. Your tooth is thinking about it too.”
The yes: the conversation after "I'll think about it" is the job.
Comic of a dental receptionist flipping a wall calendar: “You’ll ‘call to schedule when you’re ready’? Wonderful. See you in 2031.”
Recall: why the next visit gets booked before the patient leaves.
Comic of a treatment coordinator holding out a phone receiver: “Your insurance covers ‘everything’? Amazing. Could you call and tell them that?”
Insurance: what patients believe, and what the EOB says.

Full disclosure: the author built BuzzWisely

BuzzWisely is the AI receptionist the author built so his front desk could spend less time on hold and more time with patients. It answers the calls the team can't get to, day and night, books the visit into the schedule, and handles recall calls. Anyone who asks for a person gets one.

Or try our AI receptionist: call our test dental office at (424) 294-0637 and play the patient, with a made-up name.
